South GA Chapter represents at Turkey Rod Run!
By Emily Skelly

The 2009 Daytona Turkey Run was a huge success! We had Studebakers from as far away as Michigan and Ohio and a lot of different clubs represented. Jeff Rice is infecting the YOUNG with the Studebaker SICKNESS!The total count changed daily with some staying for the entire four days and some for one or two days. It was great to see folks we may only see once a year and renew friendships.

The food provided by Edith Fifer and the Studebaker women was delicious. This was evident by the number of Studebaker enthusiasts sitting and smiling after eating.

Who killed Studebaker?
By Bob Palma

There are many answers and theories to explain what happened to America's oldest maker of wheeled vehicles, which made its last car in 1966.

Bob Palma came up with four reasons that Studebaker couldn’t make it against the relentless challenge of the big three automakers of the 1960’s. Here is his theory reprinted from an internet discussion in 2003:

There were actually four contributing factors, probably none more important than another. Studebaker might have survived any two of them, but the combination of all four nailed
The South Bend coffin shut by early December.

Sherwood Egbert was absolutely THE point man for keeping Studebaker in the automobile business. He knew the corporation's diversification program was paying the bills being incurred by the Automotive Division, and he hoped that could continue until the Automotives could again be profitable.

2009 Florida State Meet Notes
by Ann Lee

Since we were getting so much rain up here, I suggested Wayne take advantage of the dry day we were having to load my ’53 Starliner on the trailer. This was several days before our trip to Florida.

After it was loaded he parked it in the back yard to wait for next Friday and put the keys away.

When Friday finally got here, Wayne hooked up the trailer and put our bags in the truck. As the garage door closed, I asked him several times if we had everything - did you forget anything? As usual he just nodded saying ...no - we’ve got everything except the kitchen sink. We finally pulled away at 8:30 A.M. - Florida here we come!
